Faith Inspirational Missionary Baptist Church has been a very active member of the Hub City community at large. Under the leadership of Pastor Rafer Owens for the past 17 years, this church community has been increasing their impact on the community for the past several seasons. Pastor Owens also happens to be a Compton native, graduate of Verbum Dei High School, and a Sheriff Deputy in the city for the last 21 years. A couple hundred volunteers from the Faith Inspirational Church community as well as the city’s residents came together for a Saturday afternoon of positive health and wellness awareness.

The excitement and electricity could be felt in the air all around Wilson Park in Compton early in the morning this Saturday. The heat was in full effect well into the 90s by 10am as well. The community health fair put together by Faith Inspirational and partners was scheduled to start at 11am, but the spirit of good health had people involved with resource gathering and information hunting well before 1030am. The musicians from the FIMBC choir provided the music for the day and they kept the main area filled with blacknificent vibes.

unnamed-8The atmosphere was amazing and witnessing so many organizations present and openly welcoming patrons to receive information and support was very beneficial to the community. Even government agencies such as the Los Angeles County Department of Social Services (DPSS) and The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) were apart of Saturday’s festivities. The community residents were able to access a diverse range of support from dental exams to credit consultations. Consultations about diet, accessing health care, and even financial planning was available to the people. The comprehensive health fair even included an entire section dedicated to services for Veterans.

The Compton VFW was the site for plenty of services that benefited Military Veterans. They even had their own stage for musical guests later in the afternoon. The DJ played much more smooth jazz and soul music at the VFW Veteran’s assistance area. Nurses and staff from the Long Beach Veteran’s Hospital were on hand providing health screenings for the Veterans as well.  The Compton VFW also had it’s own level of security and extra protect the Vets and their families.

Overall, the event was a huge success and people were able to get more familiar with the support that is available in the city of Compton. Children were able to get free vision screening and eye exams. Residents were offered prayer and photos in two different booths. HIV testing was also done on sight. Hopefully the community can continue to support and promote positive events such as the health fair. I’m sure Faith Inspirational has an entire agenda to keep the positive momentum flowing within in our community.
